“I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.” – Mother Teresa

A TaleMed team of 12 took those words to heart and recently set off on an Amazon Boat Ministry Trip. Working with the Central Brazil Mission, our crew provided medical, dental and other assistance to more than 400 villagers along the river banks.

The mission placed volunteers at different stations for each village to help dispense worming medication, provide dental Central Brazil medical mission tripcare, give medication after doctor visits, fit eyeglasses as well as provide haircuts and back massages.

The villagers were wonderful and the team banded together for an amazing experience, according to TaleMed Clinical Director and Trip Coordinator Susan Abbott.

“Everyone worked so well together. There wasn’t a complaint – not even once,” she says. “In the U.S., we take things for granted. Here, all you want to do is help and figure out how to reach more people next time.”

Striving for a better future

The trip was indeed impactful for Chief Financial Officer Dave Buffenbarger and Senior Vice President Randy Baker.

“Our Impacting Tomorrow initiative is one that we want to be effective and profitable just like our initiative to provide top-quality healthcare professionals to our clients,” Dave says. “Our TaleMed team came away with significantly more than we expected. Most of us viewed it as an opportunity to serve and have a great adventure on the Amazon River. We also came away with great relationships with the people we served, especially when we played soccer against a group from one of the villages.”

Randy also appreciated the opportunity to serve the villagers.

“What a wonderful experience! Sometimes we lose sight of the importance of giving back until you are truly in the jungle and see the happiness you bring to those you are helping,” Randy says. “We saw firsthand the true meaning of community. I hope we Impacted Tomorrow for those we served.”

Ephesians 3:20 sums up the trip experience for the team as they continue to serve our local communities:

Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us. (ESV)
